DIY Burlap Christmas Garland Tree Wrap

I DIY'd this burlap "Merry Christmas" ribbon tree wrap... and I love it!  This was super easy to make and totally budget friendly.  The idea to make this started when I found a killer deal on a 300 foot roll of 4" wide Burlap (Only $9.99, yes seriously under $10).  Three hundred feet of burlap, wow, I figured I'd have plenty left over for projects for many years!  And I do :)

I started by making a stencil on my Cricut Electronic Cutter.
My hubby and daughter bought me my Cricut a few Christmas's ago and I use it all the time.  It's one of my favorite crafting toys!

I used scrap-booking paper that I already had to make it.  I taped the stencil pieces together after they were cut and then I taped a border of paper all around the edges (basically so I wouldn't get paint smudges all over the surrounding burlap).

I used clear packaging tape to hold it all together since it is thick and strong.  I needed to be sure the stencil would hold up while painting over it several times.  Luckily it did and it worked even better than I thought it would.

I aligned the stencil on top of the burlap and used a basic dry kitchen sponge to blot/dab the paint on top of the stencil.  I never rubbed across the stencil because it might have ripped since it was made from craft paper.  I just kept adding paint to the sponge tip and blotted away.

I would paint two stencils, let them dry awhile and then advance the roll of burlap and paint the next two.  In between I was putting together the Christmas tree.  I used a paper plate and basic Acrylic craft paint.  The paper plate makes for easy clean up when you are done!  You can see in the next picture how I used just the edge of the sponge to do my painting/dabbing.

After I was done painting and everything was dry, I laid the painted burlap down my entry hall.  I removed all of the loose stringy pieces along the edges of the burlap.  I like the finished fringe look!

I wrapped the tree from top to bottom and then decorated the tree.  I do wish I would have made about five more feet, but I can always add on.  Since I was just guessing when it came to the length, I came pretty close to covering the tree.

I love how the finished garland ribbon turned out!  I added a yard of Burlap around the bottom of the tree for the skirt.  Here is this years finished Christmas tree...  Now it just needs some presents.  Time for me to get shopping and wrapping!

Until next time,
Happy decorating!

Diana

  6. Great idea... I don't own a circuit cutter so I assume I could just purchase a pre-made stencil or use any holiday stencil. I particularly love the photo of your garland drying in the hallway....very resourceful. Heather

  7. Love this! Definitely my style. I just bought a roll of burlap with plans to make something different with it, but now that I've seen this I will be making one. Don't you just love your Cricut? I use my all the time for projects. If anything ever happened to it I would have to run out and get another one right away! I'm visiting from Debbiedoo's Power of Pinterest party and am pinning this and am following you. Happy Holidays!

    1. When I got mine a few months ago on Amazon it was $9.99 for the burlap + $8.20 for the shipping. So with shipping it was just under $20 total. Unfortunately shipping is inevitible, because it is a large roll it does cost a few bucks to ship. I notice that there are only two buying options on Amazon now. One is $8 with $15 shipping and the other charges $15 with $8 shipping. My guess is that it became very popular for Christmas and the pricing went up a little over the holidays. For 300 feet of burlap it is still a darn good deal!

    1. Taylor, I did about 28 feet of garland. I wish I had made it about 5 feet longer so it would have fully wrapped the bottom layer. But keep in my my tree was also nine feet tall.

    2. Oh My Gosh. I love this. I have a Cricket and also love it! I wanted something different for 2013, and now I know what I am going to do. I love the burlap.

    3. feet or yards? 28 feet just doesn't seem very long in my mind.

    4. It is 28 feet Sheila... I wish I would have done 30, but 28 is all I did. My ceiling is 9 feet tall and my tree is average width... 28 feet is what you see on the tree. I hope that helps!

  12. Diana, I love your stenciled garland idea. I just bought red burlap and would love to do something similar but I don't have a circuit cutter. Do you know anywhere I could purchase a stencil with Merry Christmas or Christmas Blessings, Silent Night, etc. Or is it possible you would make and sell a stencil for us non circuit cutters users? Thanks, Teresa denneysbend@yahoo.com

    1. You can find several stencils available on ETSY.com. Just type "Merry Christmas Stencil" into the ETSY search bar and you will see many. If you don't find what you are looking for, you can type in "custom stencil" and you will find many people who can make you a custom one.

      I hope that helps!

    1. Sheryl,

Unfortunately I don't know what color that was. Sometimes I buy oops paint (custom paint that was mixed wrong) that the store has on clearance, and I don't know what the original color was since it is not a stock color. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

    1. Sorry this didn't get a reply sooner. I thought I sent it, but for some reason it didn't post.

I 'm pretty sure I used the 3 inch setting on my Cricut machine.. Hope that helps!

  17. I've had this idea pinned since last Christmas and I made mine today! It came out beautifully imperfect and I love it. Thanks so much for sharing this! BTW, if anyone is wondering, I found wire-edged burlap ribbon at Hobby Lobby. It was 10 yards and I got it 1/2 off so it was only $5. Hope that helps!

  18. How long did it the stamping and paint drying take you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Probably 3 to 4 hours total. I was doing other things in between so it didn't feel too long. I would paint two stamps, then go work on my tree for 10 to 15 minutes while that section dried, then come back and do two

  20. I LOVE this idea. I think my daughter and I will do this for an art project this year. Thank you so much.

  21. I am planning on doing this this year. The reviews for the ribbon on amazon are somewhat mixed, saying that it was a one time use because it frayed too much. Are you still able to use the ribbon you made when you created this post or has that one fallen apart? Do you recommend instead spending more on the rolls that have wired edges for durability?

    1. I've used it on three different trees. It is a little stringy now. I can still use it but have to be careful putting it up and taking it down. I've used my roll of burlap for several projects so I'm still very happy with it. However if you want to make something indestructible then you'd want to go with a finished burlap ribbon.

  22. HI Diana, I contacted you yesterday about an image being used on Etsy to promote someone elses business. Upon taking a closer look I realized that she was using photos from many other Etsy sellers so I reached out to them all so they could report a copyright infringement to Etsy. Maybe if enough people contact them they will remove the shop all together.

If you go to the listing and scroll down past the key words you will see a "report to etsy" link. There is going to be link to the policy which then has a link to start the process. Or go direct through this link.
